the ART show – Vincent Gallo: 48 People (Who Should Be Dead In Hollywood) [Jacques Peretti, 2003]

August 11, 2009

CM-glucode00599

A half-hour fictional interview with Gallo, his responses culled from various real print interviews, and voiced by a fairly terrible voice actor. Entertainment! The interviewer is openly hostile in a way that he probably wouldn’t have had the balls to be if the real Gallo were sitting in front of him, which is maybe a good thing, though obviously a bit lopsided. Take everything portrayed with its distance from reality in mind and you’ll enjoy yourself.

Atonement (Joe Wright, 2007)

Total fail, the opposite of good cinema. Naturally it was nominated for 7 academy awards.

However, the McEwan novel is succulently dread-inducing with moments of hyperreal inner psyche exploration that are among the best I’ve ever read. So do that, instead.

opening scene:

reel: “Offbeat, low-key, slowly unfolding ensemble black comedy paints slice-of-life portrait of working-class British family. Critics raved. Fans of vibrant, character-driven vignettes will enjoy this bittersweet, realistically gritty, thought-provoking art-house sleeper.”
